Phethchaburi is the old city with a long history. Its name
was referred to in the Stone Inscription No.1 of Sukhothai period. There are some archaeological ecidences about it dated back as old as the Khmer and Davaravati period.
It used to be a dukedom of Ayutthaya kingdom. Phetchaburi is one of the most attractive provinces near Bangkok. It is in the central region of Thailand, 120 km. from Bangkok.
There are many places to visit in Phetchaburi. For sea lovers, Phethchaburi's beaches have been seaside resorts since the old days. For jungle lovers, Phethchaburi
is well known for the forest of Kaeng Krachan, the widest National Park where you can do such activities as scenery viewing. There are more places to visit in Phetchaburi, especially
those that reflect cultures and ways of life. The fantasticcal aspects of Phetchaburi are talked of like it is the living Ayutthaya. People always thinks of Khao Wang, or the Palace Hill,
and the Palmyra when they visit Phethchaburi. The Palmyra has long been talked of because the rows of palm tree can be seen everywhere in Phethchaburi and it is used as the Phethchaburi symbol.
Wat Mahathat Woraviharn is an old temple of Phethchaburi, with a lot of interesting things, especially
the five-topped Prang (Tower) in brick and mortar constructed under the concept of Mahayana Buddhism. Wat Phraphutha Saiyat is another ancient temple of Ayutthaya period
prominent with a huge and fine reclining Buddha image, one of the four Buddha images of this kind in Thailand
A lot of ancient remains to see such as Wat Kampaeng Laeng, an old temple of the ancient Khmer period.
Phra Nakorn Khiri Historical Park (Khao Wang), an ancient place of the city value standing elegantly on the mountaintop as high as 62 metres. Phra Nakorn Khiri consistes of throne halls,
royal residence, temples and a group of buildings of the western Neo-classical architecture mixed with that of the Chinese topping the three big hills.
Phethchaburi also has an attractive forested
area in Kaeng Krachan which is Thailand's widest National Park full of different families of tree and wildlife, one of the best site for birds and butterflies
watching in Thailand. Places to visit can be divided according to the tourists interest into 3 main trips; art, culture and ways of life trip. One of Phethchaburi's beach is so called
"Had Chao Samran" which means the King's pleasure beach. Once, King Naresuan the Great and his younger brother visited a beach here and were really pleased with it. The beach has continued giving people pleasure until now.
The famous Had Cha-am and the beach where Phra Ratchniwes Marukkhathyawan is located are other beaches worth visiting. The biggest and most important cave in Phethchaburi is Tham Khao Luang.
Inside is enshrined a notable ornamental Buddha images built by King Rama V in dedication to King Rama IV. The cave, splendidly decorated by stalagmites and stalactites, is exclusively
beautiful when a shaft of sunlight shines through the long vertical opening.
