"Chiang Saen.....An Enshrine City"

 

The capital of Thailand's northernmost province is Chiang Rai. It is about three hours by car from Chiang Mai. Northeast of Chiang Rai is Chiang Saen, on the banks of the Mekong river. It's about 60 kilometers from the city. Chiang Saen is a city where the famous " Golden Triangle" is located nearby. The north side of Chiang Saen is the Myanmar frontier, intercepted by Ruak river, while the east side of it is the Laos frontier which intercepted by Mekong river.

Chiang Saen is an ancient city which some aged persons call "Muang Kao", that means ancient city. It's historical important for a long time, participating in different kingdoms such as Suwankomkam, Yonok, Lanna, Burmese, Ayutthaya and the Thai kingdom.

In the past, Chiang Saen is the town where the people from Xishuanbanna, China, called Thai Lue and the people from Chiangtung, Myanmar, called Thai Yai coming to live together on the bank of kukokatee river(Kok river) which flows down to Khonnatee river (Mekong river). This place was the former location of Suwankomkam kingdom which had already become a forsaked town at that time.

The fascination of Chiang Saen is its site of ancient history and the beauty of city. Numerous tourist attraction such as many pagoda (Chedi) ruins of Chiang Saen. Pagodas in Chiang Saen were decorated with stuccos in different styles which reflected to the well mixing between Sukhothai, Pu-gam and Haripunchai arts.
